Membership

Membership qualifications for Phi Alpha Theta: 

 

Undergraduate Students: To qualify for membership in Phi Alpha Theta you must have completed, or are completing, 12 hours of History with a 3.1 GPA in your History courses, and have at least a 3.0 average in all other course work. 

 

Graduate Students: Should have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours towards their Master’s in History, have a GPA of better than 3.5.

 

Fee: Applicants who qualify must pay a one-time initiation fee of $60 for national ($50) and local ($10) dues and a subscription to the Phi Alpha Theta Newsletter and the journal The Historian. Fees are paid to the Faculty Advisor. Checks should be made out to Phi Alpha Theta. Membership qualifies students to apply for scholarships, paper competitions, attend regional and national meetings, and make use of the resources of the national office.

 

Membership qualifications for Pi Nu: Students who are interested in promoting History and contributing to the success of Phi Alpha Theta, but who do not yet qualify for the national honorary, may join the local Pi Nu chapter. All that is required is a sincere interest in the discipline of History, a desire to promote the well being of Phi Alpha Theta and the Pi Nu chapter, and a willingness to meet the general Member Obligations.

 

Member Obligations: Membership requires active participation in and support of the Pi Nu chapter. This includes such activities (when possible) as attending regular meetings, Phi Alpha Theta sponsored events, assisting with the annual book sale, attendance at the annual initiation, accepting assignments from chapter officers, and general contribution of your time, ideas, insights, and good will.
